Secrets of a Bin Laden Underling in Yemen

YemenOnline.June 30- In a press interview with Tariq al-Fadhli in 1996, he stated that he is Bin Laden's “disciple” and that he is ready to sacrifice his blood and spirit to protect him.

Tariq al-Fadhli was raised and taught by al-Qaeda in Afghanistan . He returned to Yemen to fight what he calls “the atheists” and is known for his assassination attempts against Socialist Party leaders that he talks about openly and does not deny. His aim is to transform Abian Province into an Islamic Emirate. He has recruited Mujahideen from within and outside the region.

In Abian, Ja'ar was turned into an “Islamic city” and represents his dreams of an Islamic Emirate. The city followed in the footsteps of al-Qaeda, violating people's rights by whipping and killing in the name of implementing Sharia doctrines.

The government took the situation in Abian seriously and the Defense Minister personally supervised actions for quelling the Ja'ar insurgence. However, the foiling of his Islamic state drove al-Fadhli to declare his decision to join the Southern Movement. Observers are skeptical that he is being instructed by his teachers in al-Qaeda, not ruling out the prospects of connections with the Saudi al-Qaeda fugitives who have recently declared a fusion of leadership under the Yemeni al-Ofi. This is mainly because Al-Fadhli admitted his indirect relationship with him.

The latest chaos in Yemen is a mixture of demands for improved living and economic conditions as well as a stirring-up of tribal prejudices that pose serious threats to the country's stability, particularly the Yemeni unification which has just marked its 19th anniversary. Many Yemenis think of the unification as a “red line” because of the sacrifices made and blood that was shed for its achievement.

The protests for the improvement of living conditions were advocated by media as legal demands, however they deviated into separatist calls by people who exploited the harsh living conditions that were aggravated by the world economic crisis. The worst of this trouble making was the form of violent action, namely the burning and looting of citizens’ properties in the northern provinces of Lahj, Aden, Mukala and Dalie. This looting further threatens to sever the unity which was a dream for generations of Yemenis.

Ironically, the Southern Movement's control triggered disputes among notorious pre-unity revolution persons, who have been accused of tyranny and regional separatism. Unfortunately, in their attempt to dominate the movement, some are even turning their backs on the unity they made with their own hands. Al-Fadhli was among these when he suddenly rebelled, switching from being a statesman who enjoyed the country's facilities to an outlaw who recruits, misleads and arms laymen. His instructions have driven them to commit atrocities against the common people under the pretext of establishing an Islamic state.

Al-Fadhli's terrorist record ranges from being the Abian chaos organizer who has recruited and organized Jihadists in Abian and Aden to being the mastermind behind the attack on a hotel in Somalia where American soldiers were staying in 1993. He is also accused of the attempt against Ali Saleh Obad Mocbel as well as the bombing of the House of Parliament speaker, Yasin Saeed Noman.

Observers say that the facts question the sudden intimacy between the Southern Movement's former enemies (Communists) . It is questionable whether they are blindly led to execute a secret al-Qaeda agenda as Yemeni unification or separation is not among al-Qaeda's interests. The discontent created by the unfavorable political, economic and social conditions is being used to achieve their purposes. The country's stability is not the responsibility of the government alone, the opposition has a moral role to play as well. They must contribute to issues that keep the country intact and abandon negative attitudes and contentment with denouncements that do nothing more than adding fuel to the country's burning fire.
