EU provide over € 4 mln to support poorest in Yemen
The European Union (EU) announced on Wednesday allocating an amount of € 4.2 million to support the poorest groups in Yemen. Head of the EU's mission to Yemen, the ambassador Michele Cervone D'urso, said in a statement to Saba that the amount would be provided through a program of conditional cash transfers to some targeted areas in order to enhance the social protection and raise the level of school attendance in rural areas.

The program aims to address many issues relating to social protection, such as improving the level of income, access to education, and health services in rural areas and increasing the rate of enrollment in education, the ambassador explained.

He indicated that this program would contribute to alleviating poverty and promoting rural development and improving food security in the targeted areas in Yemen.

The ambassador pointed out that the EU would, through this program, open a new area of cooperation with Yemen focusing on supporting the poorest, adding that the program complements the other EU-funded projects in Yemen, which aim to alleviate poverty and promote rural development and capacity-building of agencies.

Providing support to the Social Welfare Fund is very important to enable the social security network in Yemen to protect the poorest groups and mitigate the effects of monetary reforms, he pointed.

He noted that the EU is the main donor to the Fund, as previously provided support to a number of activities carried out by the Fund worth € 14 million since 2006.

Moreover, he revealed that the EU intends to provide additional support for the Fund worth € 7 million in the coming period.
