New college to be opened in Sana'a

By Philipp Schweers

The Board of Advisors of newly organized Yemen College of Middle Eastern Studies (YCMES) met last weekend in Sana'a and laid the foundation for a unique academic institution. The intention of this project is to bring people from Yemen and all over the world together for an in-depth study program on Middle Eastern issues. Founded in 1989 as the Yemen Language Center (YLC) by Sabri Saleem from Haraz, the institution looks back on nearly 20 years long experience in teaching foreigners in Yemen and educated thousands of interested individuals in Arabic. Thus, this institution worked as cultural bridge between Yemen and rest of the world. Due to an increasing need of cross-cultural partnership and understanding between the Middle East and the rest of the world, the idea of a college located in Yemen with a special program on Middle Eastern Studies, addressed to individuals from all over, was born. Now, after the Board Meeting, the idea seems finalized and may bridge the gap between the cultures a little bit more.Board members include Dr. Abdul Karim al-Iryani, Chairman of the Board of Advisors, current political advisor to the President and Former Prime Minister of Yemen; Dr. Brinkley Messick of Columbia University, Vice-Chairman to the Board; Dr. Willard White of Marts & Lundy, Secretary Treasurer to the Board; Dr Abdul Wahab Thabet of the Thabet Group of Companies; Dr. Muhammad al-Mottahar, Vice Minister in the Ministry of Higher Education; Drs.
