Sana’a, March 30, 2008 - Scores of young protesters blocked roads and burned tires in the streets in Al-Dhali’ province on Sunday protesting against unfulfilled government's promis to enlist them in the army.
Protesters first gathered in front of the gate of Brigade 35 and then marched towards the headquarters of the ruling General People’s Congress party (GPC) carrying a donkey.
Protesters smashed windows of the GPC’s offices and tried to break into them; however; security personnel guarding the premises fired bullets in the air to disperse the protesters.
Protesters became more wild when a protester was hit by a military vehicle and stormed several shops and clashed with their owners. A woman was also injured in the head, but witnesses could not explain her injury. Both were taken to a nearby hospital.
Demonstrators demanded to be enlisdted in the army.
In a statement, the opposition Joint Meeting Party (JMP) blamed the governmetn for waht had happened and accused it of irresponsibility in dealing with the young people's plight.
