Diesel Shortage hits Sana'a
Sana'a,May15,2008-(YemenOnline-Exclusive)-Bakeries in Sana'a reported shortage of diesel supplies from Yemen Petroleum Company (YPC). Some Bakeries had no choice but to close until the diesel supplies are resumed. Long lines in Gas stations attest to the crisis despite government announcement that it has imported 400,000 tons of diesel to meet demand. YPC is reported to have cut distribution quotas to each governorate by 60%.  Earlier this week, the Government also formed a committee headed by Dr. Rashad Al-Alimi, Vice PM, Minister of Interior, to investigate and stem widespread smuggling of subsidized diesel. The subsidized price of diesel in the local market is $0.17/liter; the going international price is around $0.90/liter. Various Government sources estimate smuggling to account for over 70% of total diesel imports into Yemen. Yemen imports over three and half billion liters of diesel annually.
