YemenOnline >> Politics Senior military commander reportedly killed in Sa’ada Sana’a, May 19, 2008 (YemenOnline) – Local sources in Sa’ada governorate said a high-profile military commander was killed in armed clashes between government forces and al-Houthi followers in Sa’ada governorate on Friday.
Brigadier General, Thabet Muthana Jawas, was reportedly killed in fierce clashes with al-Houthi supporters in Azzan mountain area in Sa’ada last Friday.
Jawas is one of the top military commanders in Yemen’s army who has been fighting al-Houthis rebels since the inception of their uprising in 2004.
Jawas reportedly killed rebel leader, Hussein Badruldin al-Houthi, in Sa’ada in 2004.
Defense ministry website 26Sept.net reported that commander Jawas has described al-Houthis as mercenaries and terrorists. He also ridiculed the news of his death reported by al-Houthis.
He asserted that the annihilation of al-Houthi group is imminent.
Local sources indicated that armed clashes continued between government military forces and al-Houthi fighters.
Twenty troops were reportedly injured in Haidan area in Sa’ada and Herf Sufyan in Amran on Sunday.
