The South took to the streets in peaceful demonstration to honor the anniversary of the civil war's closing with a Northern victory. In addition, it is the first anniversary of the renewed separatist movements that started last year. The protested against the Northern control of the south and the rise the in staple food prices.
The Southern sentiment is one of resentment and dissatisfaction, they feel the government disregards their interest as can be seen in their poverty and weak political influence. Many Southerners were angry after over 60,000 retire soldiers and civil servants were denied their pension last year. Now, while some are calling for an end to what they call a "Northern Occupation" of the South, most are calling for more government attention and expanded Southern rights.
The government rounded up activists and journalists in Aden to make sure there were no more demonstrations. Aden also passed a law that bans the congregation of people without permission from the government.
