Yemen : Taiz bakeries resume operations after agreement to raise bread price to 1,400 rials per kilogram

Taiz — Bakeries across the city of Taiz have resumed operations following a new agreement between local authorities and the Bakers’ Syndicate to raise the official price of bread to 1,400 Yemeni rials per kilogram.
The decision comes after a city-wide strike that paralyzed bread production and triggered a severe shortage earlier this week.
The agreement was reached after several days of negotiations, during which bakery owners insisted that the previously mandated price of 1,200 rials per kilogram was unsustainable due to rising costs of flour, fuel, and other essential inputs.
The strike, which began on Sunday, led to the closure of nearly all bakeries in Taiz, exacerbating the already dire humanitarian situation in the war-torn city.
Under the new arrangement, bakeries are now permitted to sell bread by weight at the adjusted rate of 1,400 rials per kilogram. Local officials stated that the price revision aims to balance the needs of consumers with the economic viability of bakery operations.
"This agreement reflects the reality of market conditions and ensures that bakeries can continue to operate without incurring losses," said a representative of the Bakers’ Syndicate. "We are committed to providing affordable bread to the public, but we also need to cover our basic costs."
Residents welcomed the reopening of bakeries but expressed concern over the rising cost of living. For many families in Taiz, where unemployment and poverty are widespread, the price hike adds further strain to household budgets.
Humanitarian observers warn that the situation underscores the fragility of Yemen’s food supply chain and the urgent need for broader economic stabilization. Bread remains a staple food for millions of Yemenis, and disruptions in its availability can quickly escalate into wider social unrest.
Local authorities have pledged to monitor bakery compliance with the new pricing and to prevent exploitation or artificial shortages. Meanwhile, aid organizations continue to call for increased support to address food insecurity and inflation across Yemen.
