UN Praises Oman’s Role in Resolving UN Staff Crisis in Yemen

Muscat — The United Nations has expressed deep appreciation for the diplomatic efforts of the Sultanate of Oman in resolving a sensitive situation involving UN staff members in Yemen.
The commendation came during a phone call between UN Secretary-General António Guterres and Omani Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr Albusaidi, in which both sides discussed developments in Yemen and broader regional challenges.
According to official statements, Guterres thanked Oman for its “humanitarian and diplomatic leadership” in securing the release and protection of several UN employees who had been detained or restricted by Houthi authorities in Sanaa. The Secretary-General emphasized that Oman’s intervention was instrumental in de-escalating tensions and restoring operational stability for UN missions in Yemen.
The situation had drawn international concern after reports emerged of UN staff being held under house arrest and facing movement restrictions in Houthi-controlled areas. Oman, known for its neutral stance and quiet diplomacy, played a key mediating role in facilitating dialogue between UN officials and local authorities.
“Oman’s commitment to peace and humanitarian principles continues to make a tangible difference in the region,” Guterres said, praising His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik for his leadership and support of UN efforts to promote stability in Yemen.
The conversation also touched on developments in the occupied Palestinian territories, with both parties stressing the importance of maintaining the ceasefire in Gaza and ensuring the uninterrupted flow of humanitarian aid.
Oman’s role in Yemen has been widely recognized by international organizations for its constructive engagement, humanitarian diplomacy, and support for conflict resolution. The Sultanate remains a key regional partner in efforts to address the humanitarian crisis and promote peace across the Arabian Peninsula.
