Senior al-Qaeda Leader Abdul Wasi al-Sanani killed in Yemen’s Marib

Aden – A prominent figure within al-Qaeda’s Yemen branch, Abdul Wasi al-Sanani—widely known as the group’s “Black Box”—was shot dead by unidentified gunmen in the Al-Samdah area of Marib province, according to local security sources.
Al-Sanani was reportedly traveling alone on a motorcycle when assailants opened fire, fatally wounding him before fleeing the scene. He was transferred to a hospital in Marib city but succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.
Known for his deep operational knowledge and strategic role within the organization, al-Sanani was considered one of al-Qaeda’s most dangerous and elusive leaders. His nickname, “the Black Box,” reflected his intimate access to the group’s internal communications, logistics, and regional alliances.
The assassination occurred in Wadi Ubaidah, a region where al-Qaeda and ISIS elements have regrouped following military setbacks in Bayda and other provinces. The area has become a hub for extremist activity amid Yemen’s ongoing instability.
No group has claimed responsibility for the killing, and investigations are underway to identify the perpetrators. Analysts suggest the attack may reflect growing internal divisions or rivalries within extremist networks operating in the region.
The incident marks a significant blow to al-Qaeda’s leadership structure in Yemen and raises questions about the group’s future operational capacity in the face of mounting pressure from both local and international forces.
