Yemeni Gov't Accuses Houthis of Using UN Flights to Smuggle Leaders, Calls for International Investigation

Sana’a – Yemen’s internationally recognized government has accused the Houthi rebel group of exploiting United Nations humanitarian flights to smuggle senior figures out of the country, in what it described as a “dangerous breach of international protocols.” The government is urging the UN to launch an independent investigation into the alleged misuse of its air transport services.
In two separate statements issued this week, Yemeni officials claimed that Houthi leaders had boarded UN-operated flights departing from Sana’a International Airport under the guise of humanitarian travel, bypassing security checks and international sanctions. The alleged smuggling operations reportedly involved individuals affiliated with the group’s military and intelligence wings.
“This is a serious violation that undermines the neutrality of humanitarian operations and threatens regional security,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement. “We call on the United Nations to urgently investigate these abuses and ensure its mechanisms are not exploited for political or military purposes.”
The accusations come amid growing scrutiny of Houthi activities in northern Yemen, where the group maintains control over key infrastructure, including airports. Independent watchdogs have previously warned of attempts by the Houthis to use civilian aviation for covert operations, including the transport of funds, weapons, and personnel.
UN officials have not yet publicly responded to the allegations, though sources within the organization have acknowledged the need for tighter oversight of flight manifests and passenger vetting procedures.
The Yemeni government emphasized that while it supports humanitarian access to all regions of the country, such access must not be manipulated to serve the interests of armed groups.
