UN Security Council Discusses Yemen Crisis and Expert Panel Report in Monthly Briefing
Aden – The United Nations Security Council convened its monthly session on Wednesday to review the latest developments in Yemen, with a particular focus on the humanitarian crisis, political impasse, and the findings of the UN Panel of Experts on Yemen.
During the meeting, Ambassador Jihoon Cha of the Republic of Korea, chair of the 2140 Yemen Sanctions Committee, delivered a comprehensive briefing outlining the deteriorating security conditions and the urgent need to renew the sanctions regime.
The Council is expected to vote later this month on extending financial and travel bans targeting individuals and entities obstructing peace efforts, as well as renewing the mandate of the Panel of Experts, which is set to expire on December 15.
The Panel’s latest report, submitted in October, highlights escalating repression in Houthi-controlled areas, increased recruitment linked to regional conflicts, and violations of international humanitarian law.
It also warns of growing threats to maritime security in the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandeb Strait, exacerbated by the Houthis’ expanding regional posture and alignment with external actors.
Council members expressed concern over the stalled peace process and the worsening humanitarian conditions, with over 19 million Yemenis in need of assistance.
Several delegations called for unimpeded humanitarian access, accountability for rights violations, and renewed diplomatic engagement to revive inclusive negotiations.
The meeting underscored the international community’s continued focus on Yemen amid broader regional tensions, and reaffirmed the Security Council’s role in supporting a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
