Houthis Launch Surprise Campaign to Remove Surveillance Cameras Southern Hudaydah

Hudaydah – Local residents in southern Hudaydah have reported a sudden and sweeping campaign by Houthi forces to dismantle surveillance cameras from public streets and private homes, in what observers describe as a sign of deepening internal security fears within the group.
According to eyewitness accounts from districts including Al-Tuhayat and Bayt al-Faqih, armed Houthi units conducted unannounced raids over the past week, ordering shop owners and homeowners to remove all external cameras. In several cases, residents said the militants forcibly disconnected devices and warned of punitive measures for non-compliance.
The campaign has sparked confusion and concern among civilians, many of whom rely on surveillance systems for protection amid ongoing instability. “They came without notice and demanded we take down our cameras,” said one shopkeeper in Al-Tuhayat. “They claimed it was for security reasons, but offered no explanation.”
Security analysts suggest the move reflects growing paranoia within Houthi ranks over potential surveillance and intelligence leaks. Similar operations have been reported in Sana’a and other Houthi-controlled areas, where the group has also banned internet-connected devices and restricted digital communications.
The removal of surveillance infrastructure comes amid heightened tensions in the region, including recent airstrikes and reports of internal dissent. Experts warn that such measures may further isolate communities and hinder efforts to document abuses or maintain public safety.
Human rights advocates have called for transparency and accountability, urging the Houthis to respect civilian property and avoid actions that exacerbate fear and insecurity.
