Yemen Welcomes U.S. Sanctions Targeting Houthi Networks

Aden – The internationally recognized government of Yemen has welcomed the United States’ latest round of sanctions against the Iran-backed Houthi group, calling the move “a vital step toward curbing terrorism and restoring regional stability.”
The U.S. Treasury Department announced on Thursday its largest sanctions package to date against the Houthis, targeting 32 individuals and entities, along with four vessels linked to illicit revenue generation, weapons procurement, and maritime attacks in the Red Sea.
Official Yemeni Response:
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Aden, the Yemeni government praised Washington’s action, stating:
“These sanctions send a clear message that the international community will not tolerate the Houthis’ continued aggression, smuggling operations, and threats to global shipping lanes.”
The ministry emphasized that the Houthis’ coordination with Iran and their attacks on commercial vessels and neighboring countries have undermined peace efforts and endangered civilians across the region.
Background on Sanctions:
The U.S. sanctions aim to disrupt the Houthis’ financial and logistical networks, including petroleum smuggling operations and companies based in China, the UAE, and the Marshall Islands that allegedly supply military-grade components.
John K. Hurley, Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence, stated:
“The Houthis continue to threaten U.S. personnel and assets in the Red Sea, attack our allies in the region, and undermine international maritime security in coordination with the Iranian regime”.
Regional Implications:
Yemen’s government urged other nations to follow suit and increase pressure on the Houthis, especially in light of recent escalations—including Israeli airstrikes and the assassination of a senior Houthi leader—that have further destabilized the country.
The statement concluded with a renewed call for international support to advance the peace process and protect Yemen’s sovereignty from foreign-backed militias.
