Report Reveals 550 Political Executions Carried Out by Houthi Militias in Yemen Since 2014

Aden -- A newly released human rights report has documented 550 cases of political executions carried out by the Houthi militia in Yemen between 2014 and 2024, shedding light on a decade of systematic repression and violence against political opponents.
The report, titled “The Execution of Political Opponents in Yemen” and published by Rights Radar in February 2025, details how the Houthis have used executions as a tool to silence dissent, intimidate rivals, and consolidate control over areas under their authority.
Victims include political activists, tribal leaders, military officers, journalists, and religious figures who were accused of opposing the group’s ideology or collaborating with rival factions.
According to the findings, many of the executions were carried out following unfair trials or without any judicial process, often in secret detention centers or public squares. The report also highlights cases of mass executions, including the killing of 9 individuals in Sana’a in 2021, which drew international condemnation.
Rights Radar called on the United Nations and international human rights bodies to investigate these crimes and hold perpetrators accountable. The organization emphasized that such acts may constitute war crimes and crimes against humanity under international law.
The report also warns that the continued impunity enjoyed by Houthi leaders has emboldened further violations, including arbitrary detention, enforced disappearance, torture, and targeting of humanitarian workers.
Human rights advocates have urged the international community to pressure the Houthis to halt executions, release political prisoners, and engage in a transparent peace process that respects human rights and the rule of law.
