Greek Frigate HS Spetsai Successfully Escorts Commercial Vessel in Red Sea as Part of EU’s ASPIDES Mission

Aden — The Greek frigate HS Spetsai has successfully completed a close protection operation for a commercial vessel transiting through high-risk waters in the Red Sea, according to a statement issued by the European Union’s naval mission ASPIDES.
The escort mission was carried out as part of ASPIDES’ broader mandate to safeguard international shipping lanes from aerial and maritime threats, particularly in areas vulnerable to Houthi attacks. The operation ensured the vessel’s safe passage through the designated zone without incident.
“This successful escort underscores the effectiveness and readiness of ASPIDES naval assets in protecting freedom of navigation,” the mission command said. “HS Spetsai demonstrated exceptional coordination and vigilance throughout the transit.”
The EU’s ASPIDES mission, launched in early 2024, is a defensive maritime operation aimed at securing commercial traffic in the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, and surrounding waters. Led by Greece, the mission includes naval contributions from several European countries and operates in close coordination with international partners.
The protection of merchant vessels has become a strategic priority amid rising threats to maritime security in the region. ASPIDES continues to conduct surveillance, escort, and deterrence operations to uphold safe navigation and support regional stability.
