MSF Reports Widespread Outbreak of Acute Watery Diarrhea in Yemen's Al Hudaydah

Al Hudaydah – The international medical humanitarian organization Doctors Without Borders (MSF) has sounded the alarm over a rapidly escalating outbreak of acute watery diarrhea in Al-Zaidia District, a densely populated area in Yemen’s Al Hudaydah Governorate.
The outbreak, which began in late September, has now reached hundreds of suspected cases, with many patients requiring urgent medical attention.
MSF teams operating in the region have set up emergency response units to treat affected individuals and prevent further spread. “We are witnessing a sharp increase in cases, and the situation is deeply worrying,” said an MSF field coordinator. “The lack of clean water, poor sanitation infrastructure, and limited healthcare access are fueling the spread of this disease.”
The organization has deployed additional medical staff and supplies to the district, including oral rehydration solutions, intravenous fluids, and antibiotics where necessary. MSF is also working with local health authorities to conduct community awareness campaigns and distribute hygiene kits to vulnerable households.
Al-Zaidia is one of several districts in Yemen facing deteriorating health conditions due to years of conflict, economic instability, and underfunded public services. The outbreak comes amid broader concerns about Yemen’s vulnerability to waterborne diseases, including cholera, which has plagued the country in recent years.
MSF has called on international donors and humanitarian agencies to urgently scale up support for water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) programs in the region. “Without immediate intervention, we risk seeing this outbreak spiral out of control,” the organization warned.
This latest crisis underscores the fragile state of Yemen’s healthcare system and the critical role of humanitarian organizations in responding to public health emergencies. MSF continues to monitor the situation closely and is urging the global community not to overlook the growing health threats facing Yemen’s population.
