Over 300 Undocumented African Migrants Arrive on Shabwa Coast in Yemen
SHABWA — More than 300 undocumented African migrants have arrived on the shores of Shabwa Governorate in southeastern Yemen, marking one of the largest recent influxes along the country’s eastern coastline.
The migrants, primarily from Ethiopia and Somalia, landed on the Kida coast in Radhom district, according to local sources and humanitarian monitors. The group reportedly included 256 Ethiopian nationals, among them 103 women, and 80 Somali migrants.
Their arrival underscores the intensifying use of Yemen’s “Eastern Route” by migrants fleeing hardship in the Horn of Africa and seeking passage toward Gulf countries. Local authorities in Shabwa, have expressed concern over the growing pressure on limited resources and infrastructure.
“Shabwa Governorate finds itself caught at the epicenter of a transboundary crisis,” noted a recent report by the South24 Center, highlighting the intersection of humanitarian, security, and social challenges.
Security forces have also intercepted boats carrying migrants in recent months. In one incident, a vessel operated by Somali nationals was seized off the coast of Kaidah, transporting 150 undocumented Ethiopian migrants, including 30 women.
The surge in arrivals has raised alarms among humanitarian organizations, who warn of deteriorating conditions for migrants stranded in Yemen. Many face exploitation, detention, or forced recruitment amid the country’s ongoing conflict and fragmented governance.
Local officials continue to call for international support to manage the crisis, emphasizing the urgent need for coordinated humanitarian response, border monitoring, and protection mechanisms.
