UNDP-Led Fisheries Project Trains 3,000 Yemeni Fishermen to Boost Sustainability and Coastal Livelihoods
Aden – The Sustainable Fisheries Development Project in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and funded by the World Bank has successfully trained nearly 3,000 Yemeni fishermen in advanced fishing techniques and fish preservation methods during 2025.
The initiative, which targets vulnerable coastal communities across Yemen, aims to enhance productivity, improve product quality, and ensure the long-term sustainability of marine resources.
Training sessions focused on modern gear handling, eco-friendly fishing practices, and low-cost preservation technologies to reduce post-harvest losses and increase market value.
“Empowering local fishermen with practical skills is key to revitalizing Yemen’s fisheries sector and securing livelihoods,” said a UNDP representative. “This project not only supports economic recovery but also promotes sustainable resource management in one of the country’s most vital sectors.”
The World Bank emphasized its commitment to supporting inclusive development and climate-resilient livelihoods in fragile settings, noting that Yemen’s coastal communities face mounting challenges due to environmental degradation and economic instability.
The project is part of broader efforts to restore Yemen’s fisheries value chain, protect marine ecosystems, and foster community-led development in regions heavily dependent on the sea.
