UN Envoy Warns of Deep Trust Deficit in Yemen’s Political Process
Sana’a — The United Nations Special Envoy to Yemen, Hans Grundberg, acknowledged that the country’s political process is facing a serious impasse marked by a complete erosion of trust among the parties to the conflict.
In remarks delivered this week, Grundberg noted that the hope which existed in September 2023 has significantly diminished, stressing that the roadmap he presented at that time is no longer viable in today’s context.
He explained that the lack of confidence between stakeholders has undermined efforts to move forward with negotiations and implement agreed frameworks.
“The political process in Yemen is confronting a genuine dilemma,” Grundberg said, highlighting that the absence of trust has become the central obstacle to progress. He added that while international and regional actors continue to push for dialogue, the environment has shifted dramatically since last year, making previous proposals difficult to apply.
Analysts view the envoy’s admission as a stark reflection of the challenges facing Yemen’s peace efforts, where years of conflict have entrenched divisions and weakened prospects for reconciliation.
The statement underscores the urgent need for renewed confidence-building measures and a reassessment of strategies to revive negotiations.
