China Signals Readiness to Support Yemen’s Security Capacity Through Strategic Cooperation

Sana’a — China has expressed its readiness to support Yemen in strengthening its internal security capabilities, as part of a broader effort to deepen bilateral cooperation and promote regional stability.
The announcement follows high-level diplomatic engagements between Chinese and Yemeni officials in Riyadh and at the United Nations.
During a recent meeting between Yemen’s Deputy Foreign Minister Mustafa Noaman and Chinese Chargé d’Affaires Shao Cheng, Beijing extended an invitation for Yemen to join the Global Security Initiative (GSI)—a Chinese-led framework aimed at fostering international security partnerships and capacity-building in conflict-affected states.
The discussions emphasized China’s willingness to provide technical assistance, training programs, and development support to enhance the efficiency of Yemen’s security institutions. The Chinese side also reiterated its commitment to supporting Yemen’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, while encouraging peaceful dialogue to resolve the country’s protracted conflict.
In parallel, Chinese Ambassador Geng Shuang addressed the UN Security Council, calling on the international community to play a constructive role in de-escalating tensions in Yemen and the wider Middle East. He reaffirmed China’s support for a political solution and emphasized the importance of humanitarian access and infrastructure recovery.
Yemeni officials welcomed the initiative, highlighting the urgent need for international support to rebuild the country’s security sector, which has been severely weakened by years of war, fragmentation, and the proliferation of armed groups.
Analysts view China’s outreach as part of its expanding diplomatic footprint in the Middle East, where it has recently brokered regional dialogues and offered development-oriented alternatives to traditional Western aid models. While the specifics of the proposed security assistance remain under discussion, the move signals a potential shift in Yemen’s external partnerships.
If formalized, the cooperation could include training for police and border forces, cybersecurity support, and logistical aid—all critical to restoring state authority and combating transnational threats such as arms smuggling and terrorism.
As Yemen continues to navigate a fragile peace process, international engagement—particularly from neutral actors like China—may play a pivotal role in stabilizing the country and rebuilding its institutions.
