Aden — The United Kingdom has expressed strong support for the United Nations Security Council’s decision to renew sanctions targeting Houthi militias in Yemen, following the Council’s adoption of Resolution S/2025/736. 

The resolution extends the existing sanctions regime—including asset freezes and travel bans—for an additional 12 months, aiming to curb violations of the arms embargo and deter destabilizing activities in the war-torn country.

Speaking after the vote, UK Chargé d’Affaires to the UN, Ambassador James Kariuki, emphasized that the resolution reinforces the Council’s ability to monitor and respond to threats posed by the Houthis. “Today’s adoption underlines this Council’s continued commitment to advancing peace and stability in Yemen,” Kariuki stated. “The resolution will support the Council’s ability to monitor—and therefore deter—violations of the arms embargo”.

The draft resolution, submitted by the United Kingdom, received 13 votes in favor, with Russia and China abstaining. It renews the mandate of the Panel of Experts overseeing the sanctions and reaffirms the international community’s stance against the illicit flow of weapons and resources to armed groups undermining Yemen’s security.

The UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office reiterated its position that targeted sanctions remain a vital tool in pressuring armed actors to engage constructively in the peace process. The renewed measures are part of broader efforts to support UN-led negotiations and alleviate the humanitarian crisis affecting millions of Yemenis.

The Security Council’s action comes amid ongoing regional tensions and fragile ceasefire arrangements. The UK continues to call for inclusive dialogue and urges all parties to respect international humanitarian law and work toward a sustainable political solution.
