Trump, Netanyahu to discuss IDF freedoms, Qatar’s role in Gaza’s future

In a high-level meeting at the White House later on September 29, US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are expected to address Israel’s demand for continued freedom of military action in Gaza, particularly in the event that Hamas attempts to rearm or rebuild.
Israel has requested that the United States explicitly affirm the Israel Defense Forces’ (IDF) right to act against potential what it calls “terror threats” in Gaza, should militant groups attempt to regain strength.
However, mediating countries involved in ongoing negotiations have cautioned that such language may discourage Hamas from agreeing to a deal, Caliber.Az reports per Israeli media.
Another major topic on the agenda is the role of Qatar in Gaza's reconstruction and administration. A few months ago, Israel had agreed to allow Qatari involvement and funding for rebuilding efforts in the territory.
However, officials in Jerusalem are now seeking to limit Qatar’s influence, amid strained ties, Israeli airstrikes on Qatar's capital, and Doha’s call for international criticism of the Israeli government.
“Qatar wants to be the dominant actor in the Strip,” a source familiar with the talks said, noting that a rivalry with Egypt over this role is now unfolding in diplomatic discussions.
Negotiations over President Trump’s proposed 21-point plan have advanced in recent days.
Overnight, an Israeli official said there had been “substantial progress” following lengthy discussions between Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, special envoy Steve Witkoff, and Prime Minister Netanyahu at his hotel in New York.
“There is a good atmosphere toward a conclusion. There has been substantial progress toward agreements,” the official told reporters.
Trump and Netanyahu will meet at 6 p.m. Israel time (19:00 GMT+4) in the Oval Office, followed by a private lunch and a joint news conference.
