Yemen's Gov't Urges Humanitarian Agencies to Relocate Headquarters to Aden Following UN Coordinator’s Move
Aden – The internationally recognized Yemeni government has issued a formal call for all international and local humanitarian organizations operating in the country to relocate their main offices to the southern port city of Aden.
The announcement comes just one week after the United Nations shifted the office of its Humanitarian Coordinator from Sana’a to Aden, citing operational and security considerations.
In an official statement released Monday, the Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation emphasized that the move aims to “enhance coordination, transparency, and access” in humanitarian operations, particularly in areas under government control. The ministry urged agencies to “align with the new administrative framework” and begin the relocation process immediately.
Government officials described the UN’s decision as a “positive step toward restoring institutional balance and ensuring equitable aid distribution.” They also reiterated concerns over restrictions imposed by Houthi authorities in Sana’a, including interference in aid delivery, staff mobility, and data reporting.
Aden has increasingly become the administrative hub for the Yemeni government and several diplomatic missions, despite ongoing challenges related to infrastructure and security. The relocation of humanitarian offices is expected to accelerate efforts to streamline operations and improve oversight amid growing needs across the country.
Humanitarian groups have yet to issue a unified response, though several agencies have acknowledged receiving the government’s directive. Some have expressed logistical concerns, citing the complexity of relocating staff and equipment, while others are reportedly assessing the feasibility of partial relocation.
The move marks a significant shift in Yemen’s humanitarian landscape, potentially reshaping coordination mechanisms and access strategies in one of the world’s most protracted crises.
