Israel’s military said Wednesday that it had likely intercepted a missile launched from Yemen, where Iran-backed Houthi rebels have frequently targeted Israeli territory.

The missile triggered air raid sirens in Haifa and other northern communities shortly after 4:00 am local time (0100 GMT), the military said.

“An interceptor was launched toward the missile, and the missile was most likely successfully intercepted,” the army announced on Telegram.

Since the war in Gaza began in October 2023, the Houthis have repeatedly launched missiles and drones at Israel, calling the attacks an expression of solidarity with the Palestinians.

The Houthi rebels, who control large parts of Yemen, have also targeted ships they claim are linked to Israel in the Red Sea — a key artery for global shipping. In response, Israel has carried out multiple strikes on Huthi positions in Yemen, including in the capital, Sanaa.

The United States has also conducted near-daily operations against the Houthis over the past month, saying the campaign is intended to deter attacks on international shipping in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.
