Yemen to Witness Total Lunar Eclipse on Sunday Night

Sana'a– Skywatchers across Yemen are set to witness a breathtaking celestial event this Sunday evening, September 7, as a total lunar eclipse—commonly known as a "blood moon"—graces the night sky.
According to astronomical data, the eclipse will begin with the penumbral phase at 6:28 PM local time, followed by the partial eclipse at 7:27 PM.
The moon will enter totality at 8:30 PM, reaching its maximum eclipse at 9:11 PM, when Earth’s shadow will completely cloak the lunar surface in a deep reddish hue. The total eclipse will end at 9:52 PM, with the entire event concluding by 11:55 PM, spanning a
total duration of 5 hours and 27 minutes.
The phenomenon will be visible across all regions of Yemen, provided clear skies prevail. In cities like Sana’a, Taiz, and Aden, observers are advised to find open areas with an unobstructed view of the eastern horizon to fully enjoy the spectacle.
Astronomers note that this eclipse coincides with the full moon of Rabiʿ al-Awwal 1447 AH, making it especially significant in the Islamic lunar calendar. Unlike solar eclipses, lunar eclipses are safe to view with the naked eye and require no protective equipment.
The event is part of a global eclipse visible across Africa, Europe, Asia, and parts of the Americas and Oceania. In Yemen, it offers a rare opportunity for both casual stargazers and professional observers to witness the dramatic transformation of the moon as it passes through Earth’s umbra.
Local astronomy clubs and science educators are encouraging families and students to take part in the observation, highlighting the eclipse’s educational value and its role in understanding celestial mechanics.
Weather forecasts for Sunday evening suggest partly cloudy skies in some regions, with scattered thunderstorms possible in the southwest. Observers are advised to monitor local conditions and prepare accordingly.
This will be the last total lunar eclipse visible from Yemen until August 2026, making Sunday’s event a must-see for astronomy enthusiasts.
