Francesco Galtieri Officially Assumes Role as UNFPA Representative in Yemen
Aden -- Francesco Galtieri has officially begun his duties as the new Representative of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Yemen, marking a strategic step in the agency’s ongoing efforts to support reproductive health, gender equality, and humanitarian response across the country.
With over two decades of experience in international affairs and peacebuilding, Galtieri brings a wealth of expertise to one of the UN’s most critical missions in the region. His appointment comes at a time when Yemen continues to face severe humanitarian challenges, including limited access to maternal health services, rising gender-based violence, and displacement due to conflict.
In his new role, Galtieri will oversee UNFPA’s operations in Yemen, which include providing life-saving reproductive health services, supporting women’s protection programs, and coordinating with national and international partners to strengthen health systems. UNFPA Yemen operates in close collaboration with local authorities, civil society organizations, and other UN agencies to ensure that vulnerable populations—especially women and youth—receive the care and support they need.
Galtieri’s leadership is expected to reinforce UNFPA’s commitment to delivering on its mandate: “ensuring that every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe, and every young person’s potential is fulfilled.” His arrival also signals renewed momentum for advocacy and resource mobilization to address the urgent needs of millions affected by the protracted crisis.
UNFPA has been active in Yemen for years, providing essential services in some of the hardest-to-reach areas. The agency’s work is guided by the principles of human rights, cultural sensitivity, and population dynamics, with a strong focus on empowering women and youth.
Galtieri previously held senior positions within the UN system, including roles in conflict prevention and volunteer coordination. His appointment reflects the UN’s strategic prioritization of experienced leadership in fragile contexts.
