Aden — United Nations Special Envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, concluded a pivotal visit to the southern port city of Aden, calling for a comprehensive Yemeni-led political settlement and the immediate release of detained UN and humanitarian personnel held by Houthi authorities.

During his meetings with Yemeni Prime Minister Salem Bin Buraik and representatives of civil society, Grundberg emphasized the urgency of moving beyond the current “no war, no peace” status. He urged all stakeholders to abandon the prevailing “war mindset” and commit to a just and inclusive peace process.

Grundberg also addressed the deteriorating economic situation, advocating for the resumption of oil and gas exports and the opening of key roads to facilitate trade and civilian movement. He welcomed recent progress on the Al Dhale'a road and encouraged further steps to ease humanitarian access.

A central focus of the envoy’s visit was the continued detention of 23 UN staff and several aid workers, some held for over a year. Grundberg warned that these detentions undermine trust and obstruct efforts to create a conducive environment for negotiations. He reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to securing their release through diplomatic engagement.

The envoy’s visit comes amid heightened regional tensions and a fragile ceasefire. Despite challenges, Grundberg expressed hope that inclusive dialogue and credible leadership could pave the way for lasting peace in Yemen.
