Yemen Braces for Severe Flooding Amid UN and Meteorological Warnings

Aden – International agencies have issued urgent warnings to Yemeni citizens as heavy rainfall threatens to trigger widespread flooding across multiple governorates in the coming days.
The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) have forecast intense convective rainfall during the late summer season, with precipitation levels expected to exceed critical thresholds in western and southern lowlands.
These conditions could overwhelm drainage systems and lead to flash floods, river overflows, and landslides, particularly in mountainous and low-lying areas.
Authorities have identified high-risk zones including Hodeidah, Mahwit, Dhamar, Raymah, and parts of Sana’a.
The Sordod and Siham watersheds are projected to face the most severe impact, with over 114,000 hectares of cultivated land at risk.
Agricultural communities are especially vulnerable, as flooding may damage crops such as sorghum and millet, further exacerbating food insecurity and malnutrition.
Local officials and humanitarian organizations are urging residents in flood-prone areas to remain vigilant, avoid crossing wadis during rainfall, and prepare emergency supplies.
The Yemen Red Crescent Society has activated its early action protocol to support evacuation and relief efforts.
Meteorologists warn that the peak rainfall may coincide with elevated temperatures in coastal and desert regions, intensifying the risk of infrastructure damage and displacement.
As Yemen continues to grapple with conflict and economic hardship, the looming floods pose a serious threat to public safety, agricultural stability, and humanitarian access.
