Yemen's Houthis Introduce New 50 Rial Coin Amid Currency Wear Concerns

Sana’a - The Houthi-controlled Central Bank in Sana’a has announced the issuance of a new 50 rial Yemeni coin, marking the latest attempt to address the growing issue of deteriorating paper currency in circulation. The coin is set to enter official circulation on Sunday, July 13.
According to an official statement, the new coin aims to replace damaged banknotes and improve the quality of physical currency.
The introduction will not affect the total money supply or exchange rates, the bank claims.
Exchange centers across Sana’a and affiliated governorates have been designated to facilitate the replacement process.
This release follows a previous introduction of a 100 rial coin in March 2024, which drew criticism from the internationally recognized government over concerns of monetary sovereignty and legitimacy.
