Egyptian MP Mostafa Bakry Slams International Silence on Houthi Abuses in Yemen
Cairo — Egyptian lawmaker and political commentator Mostafa Bakry has sharply criticized what he described as the “shameful silence” of international and humanitarian organizations regarding ongoing violations committed by Houthi militias in Yemen.
In a televised statement and posts on social media, Bakry condemned the lack of response from global bodies to the Houthis’ escalating abuses, including arbitrary detentions, torture, and crackdowns on civil society. He accused international organizations of turning a blind eye to the suffering of Yemeni civilians, particularly in areas under Houthi control.
“The silence of the international community is a betrayal of humanitarian principles,” Bakry said, calling on the United Nations and human rights groups to take a firm stance and hold the Houthis accountable for their actions.
His remarks come amid growing regional concern over the Houthis’ treatment of UN staff, journalists, and aid workers, as well as reports of sham trials and enforced disappearances documented by rights groups.
Bakry’s comments reflect Egypt’s broader diplomatic position in support of Yemen’s legitimate government and its condemnation of armed militias undermining regional stability.
