Yemen : Documents Reveal Extortion Scandal Targeting Homeowners in Central Taiz by Brotherhood-Linked Militants

Taiz — Leaked documents and testimonies from local sources have exposed a major extortion scheme targeting homeowners in central Taiz, allegedly orchestrated by militants affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood’s political wing, the Islah Party.
The revelations have sparked outrage across the city, as victims accuse armed groups of demanding large sums of money in exchange for vacating properties they have seized and occupied.
According to investigative reports, dozens of residential properties in the historic heart of Taiz have been illegally taken over by armed factions operating under the protection of the Taiz Military Axis, which is nominally under the control of Islah-aligned commanders. Homeowners say they have been pressured to pay “eviction fees” ranging from 1 to 5 million Yemeni rials, with threats of retaliation or prolonged occupation if they refuse.
One leaked document, obtained by local journalists, outlines a payment schedule allegedly issued by a militia commander to a property owner, demanding monthly installments to “facilitate the release” of his home. Several victims have also shared audio recordings and written agreements that appear to confirm the existence of a coordinated extortion network.
Despite mounting evidence, the leadership of the Taiz Military Axis has denied responsibility, claiming that the incidents are isolated and not officially sanctioned. However, critics argue that the lack of accountability and internal oversight has allowed such abuses to flourish unchecked.
“This is not just theft—it’s institutionalized blackmail,” said a local human rights activist. “Families are being forced to buy back their own homes while the authorities look the other way.”
The scandal has reignited public anger over corruption and impunity in Taiz, a city long plagued by factional infighting and deteriorating governance. Civil society groups are calling for an independent investigation and the immediate return of all illegally occupied properties.
International observers have also expressed concern, warning that such practices undermine trust in local institutions and further destabilize a city already suffering from war, displacement, and economic collapse.
