UN Secretary-General: UN Remains Committed to Supporting Millions in Yemen
New York -- At today’s meeting of the UN Security Council, Secretary-General António Guterres reaffirmed the United Nations’ commitment to providing support for millions of Yemenis caught in the country’s ongoing conflict.
He emphasized that despite mounting tensions and recent escalations in the eastern governorates, the UN will continue to deliver humanitarian assistance and advocate for a political solution.
Guterres warned that Yemen is “on the brink of a new crisis,” noting that unilateral actions by parties on the ground risk deepening divisions and worsening instability. He urged all sides to exercise restraint and return to negotiations, stressing that lasting peace can only be achieved through dialogue and compromise.
The Secretary-General also highlighted the plight of UN personnel detained in Sana’a, calling for their immediate release. He underscored that such actions undermine trust and obstruct the UN’s ability to carry out its mission in Yemen.
“Millions of Yemenis depend on our support,” Guterres said, pledging that the UN will not abandon its humanitarian responsibilities. He called on the international community to intensify efforts to ease the suffering of civilians, pointing to the urgent need for food, medical supplies, and protection for vulnerable populations.
The Security Council session comes amid renewed concerns over escalating tensions in Hadramawt and Al-Mahra, where recent developments have raised fears of wider conflict. Guterres reiterated that the UN stands ready to work with all parties and regional actors to prevent further fragmentation and to keep Yemen on the path toward peace.
