VACCINE-PREVENTABLE DISEASES LIKE MEASLES INCREASING IN YEMEN

Yemen faces a significant drop in immunization rates among children.
This decline continues to worsen as a result of economic deterioration, low incomes, displacement, and overcrowded living conditions in camps, coupled with an overstretched health system. Moreover, millions of children cannot be reached by routine immunization activities due to lack of access to health services, including outreach and outbreak response in some governorates.

According to the WHO-UNICEF National Immunization Coverage Estimate for 2022, about one third (27%) of children aged under one year in Yemen are not immunized against measles and rubella. Nor have these children received the minimum vaccinations of other routine immunizations required for full protection.

This has led to a resurgence and rise in vaccine-preventable diseases and associated deaths among children in Yemen, including measles. Partners are reporting surges in cases across the country.

From January to November 2023, over 50,795 people in Yemen had measles, and there were 568 associated deaths.
