Aden — The Antiquities and Museums Authority in Yemen’s interim capital, Aden, announced the confiscation of two massive archaeological artifacts, each weighing approximately two tons, after they were intercepted at the Shahn border crossing with Oman.

Officials confirmed that the artifacts were seized during an attempted smuggling operation into the Sultanate of Oman, marking one of the largest antiquities trafficking cases thwarted in recent years.

According to the Authority, the operation was carried out in coordination with border security forces, who detected the suspicious cargo and prevented its illegal transfer. 

The seized items have since been transferred to secure storage under the supervision of the Antiquities and Museums Authority for further examination and preservation.

“This successful interception underscores our commitment to protecting Yemen’s cultural heritage from theft and illicit trade,” the Authority said in a statement, adding that investigations are underway to identify those involved in the smuggling network.

Experts note that Yemen’s rich archaeological legacy has long been a target for traffickers, particularly amid years of conflict and instability. 

The latest seizure highlights both the scale of the threat and the growing efforts by authorities to safeguard the nation’s historical treasures.
